It’s heartbreaking’ – Ashleigh Barty annoyed with herself after Australian Open defeat
Ashleigh Barty has crashed out of the Australian Open after an inspired comeback from Karolina Muchova.
The world number one looked like she was in a commanding position on Rod Laver Arena after completely dominating the first set.
The match seemed to turn on its head after Muchova had a medical time out, which she later explained was due to her ‘head spinning.’
After the resumption of play, Barty struggled to get balls back into play and Muchova was ruthless enough to take full advantage.
“It’s heartbreaking, of course,” Barty said after the 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 defeat.
“But the sun will come up tomorrow. You’re either winning or you’re learning, and today is a massive learning curve for me.
“I just overplayed. I just pressed a little bit too much, and gave up too many cheap errors at some pretty critical times.”
Barty, though, refused to allow the medical time out to be the story, saying it was up to her to manage the situation batter.
“It’s within the rules,” she said. “She’s within her rights to take that time.
“That shouldn’t be a massive turning point in the match. I’m disappointed I let that be a turning point.”
