“It was tough to stay strong mentally” – Carlos Alcaraz claims quarter final spot in US Open after five set thriller
Spanish youngster Carlos Alcaraz has reached the last 8 of the US Open for the second time and is now the highest seed left in this year’s tournament as he thanked the crowd for staying late and giving him the support he needed to win
Carlos Alcaraz had chances to close out his match against Marin Cilic in the fourth set but the Croatian kept coming back and forced a fifth set before tiredness started to take its toll allowing the Spanish prodigy to take the match 6-3 in the fifth.

Speaking on court after the match Alcaraz revealed it had been “tough to stay strong after having a lot of opportunities in the fourth set” but the “strength I had in the fifth set” was thanks to the crowd.
“The energy I received today (from the crowd) made me win!”
Alcaraz will face Jannik Sinner for a spot in the US Open semi-finals.
