The 31-year-old had lost six of his seven previous encounters with his French opponent but he was clinical in the second and third sets as he took out the No.6 seed.

Viktor Troicki defeated Andrey Kuznetsov 7-6(6) 7-6(2), Mikhail Youzhny overcame John-Patrick Smith 7-6(6) 6-4 and Ricardas Berankis battled back to take out Daniel Masur 3-6 6-3 6-2.
