Injury forces Fabio Fognini to miss Davis Cup

Former Italian number one Fabio Fognini has decided to withdraw from Italy’s upcoming Davis Cup qualifier against Slovakia due to a calf injury.

World number 38 Fognini explained his omission from the team, stating that he picked up the injury whilst playing in the Rio Open quarter-finals last month.

He posted on Twitter, ”Hi everyone, I want to update you regarding my physical condition after the trip to South America. During the quarter-final I pulled my calf and, once back to Italy, I underwent many checks to understand the origin of the problem and to proceed with the required treatments. My doctors have told me I need to rest not to make my calf worse. Because of this, I won’t be able to play for Italy in the next Davis Cup match in Slovakia.”

Despite the injury, he continued to participate in the Rio Open reaching the semi-finals in the singles and winning the doubles event. Although forced to withdraw from the Italian team, he still wished the team the best of luck. ”I’m sad because the national team has always been a priority to me. I wish the best of luck to the Davis Team. Go Italy!”

Fabio Fognini will be replaced by World number 112 Stefano Travaglia. The Italians are also without World number seven Matteo Berrettini after a ”shared decision” between himself and captain Filippo Volandri.

The Italian team will be made up of Australian Open quarter-finalist Jannik Sinner, Lorenzo Sonego, Lorenzo Musetti and Simone Bolelli for the indoor event in Slovakia on March 4th and 5th.
