‘I’m sad I can’t continue’, Simona Halep withdraws from Miami Open
World No 3 Simona Halep has expressed her disappointment after being forced to withdraw from the Miami Open with a right shoulder injury.
After losing in the quarter-final of the Australian Open to Serena Williams, Halep made a successful return to action in Miami with a three-sets victory over Caroline Garcia in the second round.
However, ahead of her meeting with Anastasija Sevastova, the Romanian announced she could play no further part due to injury.
“I’m very sorry I have to pull out of singles and doubles at the Miami Open, but my injury doesn’t let me play here as I expected,” said Halep on twitter.
“I’m sad that I can’t continue, I wanted to come here to give my best and play many matches but unfortunately I can’t. Hopefully next year I will be back healthy and and better.
“I want to say a huge thank you to the Miami Open organisers and the WTA for all their efforts in staging this great event and for making us feel safe.”

Alongside the singles, Halep was forming an impressive partnership with Angelique Kerber after the pair beat reigning Australian Open doubles champions Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka.
Simona Halep will hope to be fit for the clay season where she has had success in the past, winning Roland Garros in 2018 and reaching the final in her last appearance.
