Iga Swiatek to headline stacked Berlin Open entry list in June
World number one Iga Swiatek is set to headline a strong field at the Berlin Open in June to get her grass court season underway.
The 20-year-old Iga Swiatek has been in a rich vein of form all season which has seen her rack up 28 consecutive wins.
That run has seen Swiatek win four out of the five WTA 1000 events in 2022, including last week’s Rome Open where she defended her title.
Iga Swiatek, thanks to her incredible unbeaten run, is heavily regarded as the favourite for the French Open title – a title she won back in 2020.
The Pole will be hoping to continue her excellent run of form into the grass-court season as she will be looking for her first ever tour-level title on the surface.
Her first opportunity to complete the feat will come at the WTA 500 event in Berlin – however Swiatek is set to face stiff competition.
The entry list includes former world number one’s Naomi Osaka and Garbine Muguruza as well as another eight of the top ten players including world number three Paula Badosa and Madrid Masters champion Ons Jabeur.
Berlin will also see the tournament debut of American teenager Coco Gauff.
Reflecting on the strong field signed up to the event, Tournament director Barbara Rittner stated she was proud to announce such high level entries and that Berlin is a great place to showcase that talent.
In a recent interview, Rittner told reporters, “This absolutely outstanding field shows the importance that Berlin now has in the world of tennis thanks to the bett1open.
“This high level of performance makes Berlin the centre of the tennis world in mid-June.”
