‘It’s a lot to take in’ – Iga Swiatek reflects on being World number one
Iga Swiatek has discussed her recent rise to the world number one spot saying ”it’s a lot to take in” and that ”it will take some time” for it to sink in
Last week the Polish sensation was officially confirmed as the new World number one following the shock retirement of Ashley Barty. However many pundits and analysts believed that Swiatek was bound to reach the top of the rankings sooner or later with Grand Slam Legend Chris Evert stating Swiatek ”would’ve reached world number one regardless” of Barty’s retirement.
The 20-year old has been in red hot form in 2022 winning three successive tournaments, including the coveted Sunshine Double of Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open last month, becoming only the fourth woman in history to achieve it.
Reflecting on her new position at the summit of the WTA rankings, Iga Swiatek posted on Instagram: ”So, here we are.
“One day I’m just 100% focused on my performance during another match and the next day I’m realizing how to live as number one.”
”It’s a lot to take in and I’m working through it day by day at my own pace. It will take some time but on the other hand I’m very excited.
“These last few weeks were… interesting, crazy and hard-core but I’m happy that I was also able to have some quality time in Miami after the final. Now it’s time to get back to work.”
