Iga Swiatek Miami Open 2022

Iga Swiatek playing with the ‘greatest freedom’ as she eyes French Open title

World number one Iga Swiatek has said that her approach to tennis is giving her the “greatest freedom” following her fourth successive title win at the Stuttgart Open.

The 20-year-old added to her three WTA 1000 crowns in Doha and the ‘Sunshine Double’ of Indian Wells and the Miami Open by winning the WTA 500 level event in Germany last week.

The 2020 French Open champion has now won 23 matches in a row as well as win her last seven finals without dropping a set. Her last ever defeat on the WTA tour coming on the 16th February at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

As a result she is undoubtedly the favorite ahead of the WTA 1000 events coming up in Madrid and Rome as well as the French Open in May.

However Iga Swiatek has stated the key to her current unbeaten run is to just focus on one match at a time despite the temptation of focusing on Roland Garros.

In an exclusive interview with Eurosport, the Pole said, “Every time the clay season starts you can still see Paris on the horizon, but I try to approach each game with a clean sheet and focus only on the next step, because it gives me a lot.

“I saw this season that it’s just easier for me to live this way. Certainly when it comes to tennis and physical preparations the coaches are preparing the top form for Paris, but I have the same mental approach to each game and it gives me the greatest freedom.”

Iga Swiatek is next set to play at the Madrid Open which commences on the 28th April. She will be looking to improve on her third round finish last year as she aims to win her fourth successive WTA 1000 event.
