Iga Swiatek is a player who was once regarded as the most consistent threat on the WTA Tour.
Nowadays, she is anything but.
The Polish star has become unrecognisably unpredictable, suffering plenty of shock early exits and having not won a tournament since last summer.
Swiatek’s decision to hire Francisco Roig promised to change that, but we are yet to see any huge boost to her performances.
With that in mind, it seems like she is already angling for a change in the coaching staff, just one that has been planned for some time.
Iga Swiatek reveals her new coaching plan with Francisco Roig
Speaking to media outlet Zkortu, she revealed that there is already a new coaching plan in place for the coming months, one that keeps Roig on and actually adds to his experience.
Iga Swiatek claimed: “This year, we started working with Francisco (Roig) in April, and it is planned that he will work with me for the entire season. But in the long term, I think it is wise to add another coach to the team.”
How many Grand Slam titles will Iga Swiatek win with Francisco Roig as her coach?
She's signed one of the best coaches on tour!
The 24-year-old then explained her reasoning for this planned change: “First of all, few coaches can sustain a workload of 50 weeks per year, and constant travel is a very demanding job. Secondly, having a second coach always brings a fresh perspective, a different viewpoint.
“Let’s face it: travelling together for an entire year can sometimes be difficult. As for choosing such a specialist, I think I will first need to spend at least a week or two on the court with a potential coach to understand how we will communicate.
“We already had several coaches in mind, but since it won’t happen next month, I understand that the situation will be quite fluid and subject to change. If things become clearer, I will keep you updated.”
This comes not long after Rafael Nadal stated whether he plans to go into coaching after briefly helping Swiatek out earlier this year.
When will Iga Swiatek make her return to tennis?
It has been weeks since Swiatek has taken to the court, ever since her early exit at Roland Garros.
Having cruised through her opening three rounds, the six-time major champion met the in-form Marta Kostyuk, and just could not compete. She lost handily, and has been absent from competitive play ever since.
Aryna Sabalenka or Iga Swiatek… who do you prefer? 🤔
She is set to make her grass-court return at the Bad Homburg Open, as part of a star-studded draw including Elena Rybakina, Mirra Andreeva and Elina Svitolina.
It will likely mark Swiatek’s only tournament before heading to Wimbledon to try and defend her title.
