Mats Wilander was thoroughly impressed by Roger Federer and his display of commitment to tennis in his third round win at the French Open.
The seven-time Slam champion expressed his admiration for Federer after the Swiss finished his third round match against Koepfer in the early hours in Paris, winning 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.
“I feel good that I saw Roger was in good enough shape to play like that,” Wilander said from the Eurosport Cube after the match.
“You have a lot of people say they should retire when they get a little bit old if they cannot win a Slam.
“I am of the complete opposite opinion. I absolutely love and respect Roger Federer for what he did last night.
“He could have easily thrown in the towel and say “I had a good enough practice for Wimbledon”. But no, he wants to win matches, I am just so impressed with him.”
Federer’s fourth round opponent is Italy’s Matteo Berretini, who has reached the stage for the first time in his career.
