‘I have no words,’ Emma Raducanu struggles to take in US Open fairytale
Emma Raducanu said she ‘has no words’ after defeating Maria Sakkari to reach the US Open final just three months after making her WTA debut.
The 18-year-old Brit has taken the US Open by storm, beating the likes of Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic and Sakkari to book her place in the final against fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez.
Raducanu has now made history by becoming the first qualifier ever to reach a Grand Slam final and is the first British woman to reach a Grand Slam final in 44 years.
When asked to describe the scale of her achievement, Raducanu said: “A surprise. Honestly I just can’t believe it. A shock. Crazy. All of the above.
“But it means a lot to be here in this situation. I wanted obviously to be playing Grand Slams, but I didn’t know how soon that would be. To be in the final at this stage of my career, I have no words.
