‘I completely dropped my level’ – Svitolina disappointed after shock French Open loss
Third seed Elina Svitolina was left disappointed after falling at the quarter-final stage at the French Open yesterday.
The world number five was considered by some as the favourite for the title after being the highest-ranked player left in the draw at the quarter-final stage, though the Ukrainian fell in straight sets to Argentine qualifier Nadia Podoroska.
It was a third defeat in as many quarter-final matches for Svitolina at Roland Garros, who lost at this stage in 2015 and 2017 to Ana Ivanovic and Simona Halep respectively.
Svitolina is considered by many one of the best players to have never won a Grand Slam title, and following yesterday’s loss the 15-time WTA Tour winner said she was not happy with how she had played against Podoroska.
It was a tough match for me today,” said the former WTA Finals champion. “I wish I could have handled it in a different way.”
“I think it was really tough for me to find focus,” she added.
“I didn’t perform as I wish I could and in the end I completely dropped my level.”
