‘I can get even better,’ warns Dominic Thiem after strong win on ATP Tour return

Dominic Thiem declared his win over Marco Giron at the Madrid Masters ‘a success,’ although he says he still has low expectations for the tournament.

Thiem is making a return to tennis this week after a short absence due to mental struggles and a knee injury.

He showed very few signs of rustiness, though, as he powered past qualifier Giron 6-1, 6-3 in just 58 minutes on Tuesday.

The win has set up what is sure to be a much sterner test against Alex De Minaur on Thursday, but Thiem was keen to stress he still just feels like he is feeling his way back into action.

“The expectations before the tournament were very low,” Thiem said after the match.

“For me, every match, every win is a success in Madrid. That’s why I’m happy with the way I started.

“I want to make good use of the day to train so that I can get in even better and then play against De Minaur as best I can.”
