Simona Halep - opts out of US Open

‘I am sad I didn’t play the US Open – I couldn’t watch many matches,’ admits WTA star ahead of Roland Garros

Simona Halep says she is ‘sad’ she didn’t play the US Open but she doesn’t regret her decision at all.

Halap would have been the top seed in New York after Ashleigh Barty’s withdrawal, but she decided not to play due to concerns over safety and travel.

However, despite saying she couldn’t watch the final, she says she has benefited far more from not travelling to the US.

“I didn’t watch many matches from the US Open,” Simona Halep admitted. “I only watched the first set of the final, but no full matches.

“I don’t know what happened there, but I have no regrets about my decision.

“I’m sad that I didn’t play, which is normal, but my decision was right when considering health issues and my inner peace.

Halep says remaining in Europe is just a lot easier and less stressful, and that she is feeling safe so far.

“It’s easier to travel when you are in Europe. I arrived in Rome with a private jet, and I feel safe here.

“We can’t leave the hotel but once we are at Foro Italico, it’s great, the club is big, and we can practice.

“I feel confident about my chances here and in Paris, although I’m not thinking about Roland Garros at the moment.”

Halep is the reigning Wimbledon champion and will be attempting to win her second French Open title next month.
