How Stefanos Tsitsipas could alter the ATP Finals race in Vienna despite not being in the running

Former world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas has struggled to reproduce his once superb form in 2025, slipping down to world number 25.

The Greek star has been extremely inconsistent throughout the year, winning only two Grand Slam matches and regularly falling in tournaments at the hands of lower-ranked players.

The 27-year-old also endured a very public split from coach Goran Ivanisevic after working with the Croatian for only two months.

Now working with his father – Apostolos – once again, Tsitsipas will be hoping to leave his troubles in the past and find some form as the campaign draws to a close.

If Tsitsipas can regain his form in Vienna this week, he could cause a massive shift in momentum in the race for the remaining ATP Finals spots.

Stefanos Tsitsipas faces Lorenzo Musetti in the Vienna Open first round

If Stefanos Tsitsipas defeats Lorenzo Musetti in the first round of the Vienna Open, it will likely have big ramifications for the ATP Finals race.

Musetti currently sits in the eighth and final spot, 340 points ahead of Brussels Open champion Felix Auger-Aliassime.

If Musetti were to lose this contest, he would potentially miss out on 500 ATP points, opening the door for his rivals to capitalise.

With the form Auger-Aliassime is in, few would bet against him going far at the Swiss Indoors tournament, another ATP 500 event.

When in form, Tsitsipas can trouble any player on the ATP Tour, including Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Therefore, Musetti must be wary of a potential upset, one that could severely damage his chances of achieving a key 2025 goal.

In July, Musetti described qualifying for the finals as his ‘biggest goal’ for the season.

He told the ATP Tour: “Definitely [Turin] is my biggest goal. But of course I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself. We are halfway through the season, so definitely there’s many, many points to catch.

“And of course here in the North American swing there are many with the two Masters 1000s and the US Open. So definitely one of my goals is to be really consistent and try to get as many points as possible.”

Most recently, Musetti competed at the Brussels Open, where he lost to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the quarter-finals.

As for Tsitsipas, he most recently lost in the US Open second round to Daniel Altmaier, and sits 30th in the ATP Finals race.

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ record against Lorenzo Musetti

The Greek star has a positive head-to-head record heading into the contest against Musetti, leading by five wins to two.

Between 2021 and 2023, Tsitsipas defeated Musetti on five consecutive occasions, in Acapulco, Lyon, the French Open, Barcelona and Rome.

However, Musetti has won their last two meetings, both of which took place this year.

In Monte Carlo, Musetti fought from a set down to defeat the Greek player 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
