Holger Rune is currently on the long and arduous path back to full health after picking up a devastating injury in October.
During his Stockholm Open semi-finals match against Ugo Humbert, whilst he was up a set and a break, his Achilles tendon ruptured seemingly from an innocuous manoeuvre.
He was left in tears, and his 2025 season was swiftly concluded.
Now, there are fears we might not even see him at all in 2026, despite the rapid injury progress Rune has been detailing on his social media, given the severity of an issue like this.
Who will have the best comeback season in 2026?
Fortunately, his fitness coach Marco Panichi has emerged to deliver a blunt but useful update on the Danish star.
Holger Rune’s fitness coach delivers new update on his injury progress
Speaking to Ubitennis, he began by revealing how they have dealt with the initial injury.
The Italian claimed: “We restored order. First of all in load management, then in the quality of movement.

“Holger always tends to give his all, but when you need to recover, you need discipline: progression, controlled intensity, respect for the times. In certain moments, the right thing to do is to slow him down.
“Restoring symmetry, balance, and confidence in his movements. An explosive athlete like him needs to feel his body free. When he starts to trust his support and acceleration again, everything changes.
“He’s moving the way he wants to again. He’s started to feel his body fluid again. He’s young, he reacts well, and he’s a quick learner. The key is to empower him to express his intensity, but efficiently.”
However, Panichi, who is famed for his spells working alongside Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner, then offered a broader overview of Holger Rune’s game and where they must improve: “Holger is a guy with enormous potential. Explosive, coordinated, with a very strong natural instinct. But he tends to use a lot of excess energy, especially when it’s not needed. The first job was to help him manage it.
Who do you think will win more Grand Slam titles in 2026?
“When I arrived, Holger was coming through a difficult period. There wasn’t one ‘big’ injury, but a combination of things: fatigue, compensations, small stiffnesses that limited his expressiveness. His body was sending clear signals.
“For someone like him, who bases his tennis on speed and the ability to change direction, even 10% less efficiency becomes a huge limitation. If his body doesn’t respond, everything changes: posture, support, reaction times. He moved, but not the way he knows how to move.”
Holger Rune could have unsettled Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s duopoly
Whilst the tennis world celebrates every time Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner meet in a final nowadays, there has been growing discontent about the subsequent monotony of men’s tennis.
After all, whilst these are the two best players in the world by some distance, and therefore produce the highest-quality matches, it would be nice to see some variety.
Sadly, nobody comes even close to challenging them though.

Rune, however, could have been seen as the most likely, given he is still just 22 years old and already has so many years of experience on the tour.
Not to mention the fact that he boasts wins over both Alcaraz and Sinner, with a 2-2 record against the Spaniard, and a narrow 3-2 losing record against the Italian.
His explosive play style, whilst at times risky, is exactly the kind of unpredictable play style that might have unsettled these superstars who, once they find their rhythm, become unstoppable.
Hopefully, the 2022 Paris Masters champion can come back from injury revitalised and ready to unsettle this ongoing stranglehold over the men’s tour.
