Holger Rune has given his verdict on the men’s singles tournament at Wimbledon this year and whether he thinks Jannik Sinner will be able to defend his title.

Rune will not be playing at Wimbledon this year, as he continues to recover from his Achilles injury he suffered last year.

Despite not being on court at The Championships, Rune will still be keeping a close eye on the action at Wimbledon this year.

Rune has now commented on Sinner, who won Wimbledon for the first time last year, but has not played an official match since he suffered a shock defeat in the second round of Roland Garros.

Holger Rune backs Jannik Sinner as the favourite for Wimbledon this year

Rune was asked about the contenders for the men’s singles title at Wimbledon this year on The Big T Podcast, as he explained what makes a good grass court player.

The former Wimbledon quarter-finalist was full of praise for Sinner’s grass court game, before backing him as the favourite for this year’s title.

Rune said, “The first question of what makes the great grass-court player is, I think it’s about playing aggressive, having good court decision-making is very important there, and then being balanced on the sides, and I think that’s also why we see Jannik play so well over the years in Wimbledon and Carlos [Alcaraz] as well, you know, best movers are the best players.

“So I think that’s at least for me every time I went on grass, the biggest change is the movement, not really in timing or anything, but just like how to organise yourself in the corners, how to organise yourself in short balls and your sprints and your deceleration and all of this.

“So I think that those things are going to be very important and I think still Jannik is going to be the favourite, but let’s see. I mean, everything can happen.”

When could Jannik Sinner play Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon this year?

With Alcaraz missing Wimbledon this year due to his ongoing wrist injury, seven-time champion Novak Djokovic is arguably Sinner’s biggest rival for the title.

Perhaps even more so this year, as Djokovic beat Sinner at the Australian Open in their most recent encounter.

Despite possibly being Sinner’s biggest rival for the Wimbledon title, Djokovic is down as the seventh seed for this year’s tournament.

This means that Djokovic could play Sinner from as early as the quarter-final stage at SW19, depending on where they are placed in the draw.

The Wimbledon draw takes place on Friday, June 26, with main draw action getting underway on Monday, June 29.
