Jannik Sinner sends message to Novak Djokovic one day after losing to him in semifinal of Australian Open

Jannik Sinner will likely depart Melbourne full of regret, having failed to put Novak Djokovic to the sword in their semi-final match.

Instead, his Australian Open title defence was cut short as he was eliminated from the tournament by a man 14 years his senior, and who he had beaten in all of their last five matches.

Few could possibly have predicted that outcome, especially with the clash lasting as long as it did.

Naturally, the 24-year-old cut a downbeat figure in his press conference, clearly exhausted both mentally and physically after such a gruelling encounter.

However, having seemingly rested and had time to assess his defeat, Jannik Sinner has returned with a measured and respectful message for his social media.

Taking to Instagram, he actually spoke directly to Novak Djokovic as he wrote: “Not my day, but I gave everything. Congrats to @djokernole it’s always an honour to share the court with you.”

Who is winning in Sunday’s Australian Open final?

He then turned his attention to the fans, adding: “Thanks to everyone for all the support over the last two weeks. The work continues. See you soon again.”

How Novak Djokovic beat Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals

Whilst many will point to Djokovic’s undying spirit, or his incredible clutch nature when trying to explain his win, realistically, there’s only one statistic that stands out.

After all, whilst he did serve supremely well, and was striking his forehand down the line with speed and power we have not seen for years, it was Sinner’s inability to break serve, despite the innumerable chances he was afforded, that decided his fate.

The Italian conjured up a ridiculous 18 break point opportunities throughout the match, but converted just twice.

Sinner has explained why he struggled to convert his break points, but after a while, it became inexplicable.

Should Djokovic retire whatever happens in the Australian Open final and go out in a blaze of glory?

His 11% conversion rate pales in comparison to Djokovic, who won three of the eight opportunities he was afforded.

Sinner won more points and hit more winners, and yet he is the one heading home.

Tennis is a crazy sport, and the fact that a 38-year-old was able to dethrone the two-time defending champion in such fashion only reinforces that notion.
