‘He’s a great match winner’ – Renowned coach praises Holger Rune following French Open run
The former coach of Serena Williams Patrick Mouratoglou has heaped praise on the Danish teenager Holger Rune after his epic run to the quarter-finals of Roland Garros, declaring him ‘a great match winner.’
Rune, 19, was one of the revelations of Roland Garros this year. The Dane reached the last eight of the Paris Slam in just his first appearance at the Major – his best result in any Grand Slam to date too.
Rune shone as he dominated 1world number 15 Denis Shapovalov in the first round, beating him straight sets.
He even then went on to produce arguably the shock of the tournament as he beat last year’s finalist in the French capital and world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last 16.
Rune’s French Open success demonstrated the progress he has made in 2022 as, only a few weeks prior to the Paris Major, he won his first ATP title in Munich, beating his first top ten member -world number three Alexander Zverev.
Thanks to his exploits in Paris, Holger Rune ensured that he breaks into the Top 30 of the ATP rankings for the first time.
Following his fantastic French Open run, Patrick Mouratoglou praised the teen, who is in fact a part of the French coach’s academy.
The 51-year-old discussed the strengths of the Dane saying, “Holger Rune always does more than what you expect from him.
“His top two qualities is his ability to believe in himself and his competitiveness. He is a great match winner. He knows how to win and he always has been able to win.”
