Holger Rune’s promising tennis career was brutally derailed by an Achilles injury at the Stockholm Open.

Rune has remained positive despite his tennis absence and he has kept his fans updated with consistent training videos during his time away from the ATP Tour.

The Dane has slipped to world number 27 in the rankings during his absence, but he now has the opportunity to pick up points.

Rune has been confirmed to play an ATP tournament for the first time since the Stockholm Open in October.

Holger Rune’s ATP return has been confirmed

The Dane has been confirmed to play the ATP 500 Hamburg Open, which takes place between 16th and 23rd May.

Rune joins Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alexander Zverev, and last year’s champion Flavio Cobolli at the German event.

The 22-year-old last played the event in 2024, when he reached the quarter-finals. His tournament was ended by retirement against Arthur Fils.

Rune has often played some of his best tennis on the clay and last year he defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Barcelona Open.

He has also reached the quarter-finals of Roland Garros on two occasions, in back-to-back years in 2022 and 2023.

Rune has reached a career high ranking of world number four and he will be hoping to climb the rankings again upon his return.

How many points is Holger Rune defending on the clay?

Rune will be boosted upon his return due to his middling performances during last year’s clay court swing.

The Dane didn’t reach past the third round in either the Madrid Open or the Italian Open last year, so he has given himself leeway as he returns to action.

Who was the biggest shock exit in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters?

Lorenzo Musetti, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, and Flavio Cobolli all lost!

Likewise, the rising star only reached the fourth round of Roland Garros in 2025, meaning he will not lose many points even with an early exit.

Rune currently holds 1620 ranking points and still sits above the likes of Jack Draper, Fils, and Joao Fonseca in the rankings.

At world number 27, Rune will still gain seeded entry into Masters events, as well as instant access to Grand Slams.
