The Argentinian, ranked 19th in the world, will now miss the French Open and Wimbledon and is a major doubt for the US Open, where he was a runner-up in 2002.

Nalbandian has been suffering from a hip injury since the 2008 Davis Cup quarter-final against Sweden and specialist treatment on the problem has not been successful.

The 27-year-old’s spokesman Bernardo Ballero revealed the Cordoba-born player will be operated on in Barcelona next Wednesday by doctors Marc Philippon and Jaime Vilaro.

“The progression of his latest treatment was not as good as expected and all the signs pointed towards an operation. He tried every means he could to recover, but he could not,” Ballero told TyC Sports television network.

“David is determined to take this step that will put him out of competition for three or four months. His personal doctor, Angel Luis Cotorro, will supervise the operation and will be in charge of his rehabilitation.”
