Hewitt demolishes Schwank

Hewitt, now ranked 49th in the world, took the first set 6-1 against his Argentinian opponent in only 22 minutes.

The Australian, who has won six of his 27 career titles on grass, gave Schwank, ranked 109, little opportunity to get into the match, which was concluded after only 44 minutes when Hewitt took the second set 6-0.

The 23-year-old Argentinian has struggled to reproduce the form that once catapulted him to number two in the world at junior level.

Hewitt last won the title in 2006 with a straight-sets victory over America’s James Blake having also collected the trophy for three successive years at the start of the decade.

Meanwhile, Josh Goodall failed to progress into the next round after squandering four set points during his clash with Gilles Muller.

The British number three, who received a wild card entry into the tournament, wasted four chances to sew up the second set against the Luxembourg left-hander, eventually losing 6-3 7-6 (9/7).

The 23-year-old Brit was up against it after losing the first set and his cause was not helped when he wasted three break points to reduce the arrears to 5-4.

The Englishman was equally wasteful in the second set when he squandered four set points to eventually lose out in the tie-break.

“I felt I should have won the second set,” said Goodall. “I was 6-3 up in the tie-break. I had the chances to win the set. I had four set points but these guys are not going to hand it to you.”
