Rafa Nadal smiles jokes US Open 2019

“He’s a superhero!” Rafael Nadal hailed for epic Davis Cup contribution

Rafael Nadal was a “superero” for Spain at the Davis Cup, says teammate Feliciano Lopez.

Nadal won eight matches across the week, all without dropping a set, and produced some stunning tennis along the way.

Lopez, who paired with Nadal in the doubles against Great Britain in the semi-finals, said that his contribution was way beyond what could be expected.

“I think especially Rafa playing singles and doubles almost every day, he’s been our MVP this week,” Lopez told reporters.

“Of course, I want to give credit to all of us, but he’s been amazing what he has done.

“There’s things that only people like Rafa can do and if you ask my opinion I think he’s a superhero.”

Nadal, though, was keen to highlight the controbution of another Spaniard, citing him as a huge inspiration.

Roberto Bautista Agut won the first singles rubber of the final, just a day after his father’s funeral.

“What Roberto did is out of this planet, in my opinion,” said Nadal.

“Our team is great. I don’t see a lot of teams that all five players take part on the competition.

“Each one of us played a match at least, and that makes this competition even more special because everybody of our team participated in the victory.”
