The British number one reached the quarter-finals last year before losing to Nadal but, after climbing to third in the world rankings, Henman believes the Scot can cause a shock.
Henman, a four-time semi-finalist at SW19, told Sky Sports: “He’s got a very good opportunity (to win the title).”
He added: “He had a good Wimbledon last year but he’s really kicked on from there, winning three Masters Series – that’s pretty phenomenal by anyone’s standards.
“Now he’s number three but he’s definitely closed the gap. Nadal and Federer are going to be the favourites but he’s a close third.”
Henman is confident Nadal will be fit to defend his title despite the Spaniard admitting his participation is still in doubt because of ongoing knee problems.
“Nadal’s always had issues with his knees but it seems like he’s managed them pretty well and fingers crossed he’ll be fit because it would be a big loss if he wasn’t there,” continued the former world number four.
“I’m optimistic he’ll be ready and raring to go.”
