‘He will be number one in three years’ – Former world number one predicts the next tennis superstar

Carlos Alcaraz will be the best tennis player in the world within 36 months according to double Grand Slam winning Russian star Yevgeny Kafelnikov

Alcaraz has shocked the tennis world by beating US Open number three seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets and now Kafelnikov has predicted a very bright future for the young Spanish star.

He’s still only 18 years old but Carlos Alcaraz is in the world’s top 50 players already and is sure to rise even higher thanks to his performances at this year’s final Grand Slam event.

Alcaraz triumphed over the world number three by winning a tense fifth set tie break after Tsitsipas had won the fourth set 6-0. The youngster was visibly tiring but somehow found the energy to take the match into a deciding tie break which he won 7-5.

The path for the Spaniard, who is coached by former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero, now looks easier on paper thanks to fifth seed Andrey Rublev losing to Frances Tiafoe.

Yevgeny Kafelnikov won two Grand slams and first topped the ATP rankings in May 1999. He retired in 2003 and has subsequently played on the professional golf tour and in professional poker tournaments.

Alcaraz will next face German journeyman Peter Golowczyk in a match that fans and commentators will expect him to win following this recent victory.
