The ATP award for ‘Newcomer of the Year’ has been a launching pad for several hotly-tipped stars in tennis.
The likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Alex de Minaur have scooped the ATP award in the last decade.
Jakub Mensik was last year’s winner and he followed it up with a maiden Masters victory at the Miami Open just three months later.
However, the award is not always the golden chalice. The 2010 winner did not live up to the promise and ended his career without a single career title.

Tobias Kamke won the 2010 Newcomer of the Year
Tobias Kamke was awarded the Newcomer of the Year after a bright 2010 season that saw him reach the third round of Wimbledon.
The German defeated Guillermo García López and Andrea Seppi before falling to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the third round.
The star also picked up victories against Milos Raonic and Ryan Harrison in the same season, but he failed to live up to his Newcomer of the Year reputation.
The German never reached the third round of a Grand Slam again, and his highest ranking was world number 64, which he achieved in 2011.
Kamke retired in 2022 at the Hamburg Open and he said goodbye to his tennis career without winning a single career title.
The Newcomer of the Year
Kamke is certainly the odd player out when it comes to previous winners of the ATP’s Newcomer of the Year.
Four of the last 24 winners have gone on to win Grand Slams, with Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, Sinner and Alcaraz all tasting major success.
Additionally, several of the other players have won high-profile tournaments and cracked the top 10 of the rankings.
Holger Rune, Taylor Fritz, Gael Monfils, and Kei Nishikori have all won Masters tournaments and challenged the upper echelons of the ATP Tour rankings.
Who should win the ATP Breakthrough Player of the Year award?
Kamke remains the only player since 2000 to not crack the top 50 of the ATP Tour rankings after winning Newcomer of the Year.
