”He gave me nothing” – Disappointed Cameron Norrie claims Rafael Nadal was ”too good”
British number one Cameron Norrie saw his eight game unbeaten run come to an end as Rafael Nadal clinched his third title of 2022 at the Mexican Open.
The win in Acapulco extended Nadal’s winning streak to fifteen matches – his best ever start to a season in his career. Nadal wrapped up the victory in just under two hours winning in straight sets 6-4 6-4. The Spaniard, who first won the title back in 2005 and repeated the feat in 2013 and 2020, stormed through the tournament without dropping a set to claim his fourth title in Acapulco and the 91st of his career.
Cameron Norrie seems full of admiration for Nadal in his current form, as he told EuroSport, ”He has obviously had the best start to a year in his career so yeah it is super impressive to see what he is doing.”
Reflecting on the straight sets defeat, Norrie praised his opponent for his clinical display. ”Obviously I am happy to make the final but disappointed to lose in the final. I thought I played at a very good level all week and yeah he was too good on the bigger points, I gave him a couple of games here and there and he gave me nothing and that was the difference.”
Norrie has struggled in the past against the new World number four losing on all four occasions they have played each other in the past 12 months. The Mexican Open title would have been the World number 12´s 4th ATP title and his second title in two consecutive weeks after winning the Delray Beach Open in Florida.
