The world No.2 is the third player to secure her place at the eight-player event, which will be held in Singapore for the first time this year.

It comes after a breakthrough 12 months for Halep, who was ranked No.47 in the world at the end of 2012. She enjoyed her best performance at a Grand Slam this year when she reached the final at Roland Garros, falling to Maria Sharapova, who has already qualified alongside world No.1 Serena Williams.

Having reached a career-high No.2 last month (after breaking into the world’s top 10 in February), Halep is the highest-ranked Romanian player in history. She will be only the third Romanian to compete at the WTA Finals, after Virginia Ruzici and Irina Spirlea.

"It's always been a dream of mine to compete in the WTA Finals," said Halep. "I've had great success this year, and I'm looking forward to competing against the best players in the world in Singapore."

"Simona Halep's ascent over the last couple of years has been incredible, and she has become one of the elite players in the game," Stacey Allaster, WTA Chairman & CEO, said. "As the countdown to Singapore continues, the Asian swing is an exciting time on the Road To Singapore as the picture becomes more clear about who will be competing on the ultimate stage for women's tennis."

The BNP WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global take place on October 20-26 in Singapore.
