After receiving a first-round bye, Monfils was quickly into his stride against the 31-year-old unseeded wild card, sending down 10 aces and saving six of seven break points on his way to posting a 6-1 6-1 win inside 67 minutes.

Next up for the world number 13 at the indoor hard-court tournament is a last-eight encounter with Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic, who defeated Monfils’ conqueror in the 2005 final, Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia.

Eighth-seeded Ljubicic sent down 11 aces to Tipsarevic’s seven but succumbed to the Serbian’s better all-round game as Tipsarevic ran out a 6-4 7-6 (7/3) winner in one hour and 56 minutes.

Fourth seed Philipp Petzschner of Germany reached quarter-finals in Metz for the second time after defeating French wild card Michael Llodra 7-6 (7/3) 6-3, while Frenchman Richard Gasquet also progressed with a 7-5 4-6 6-2 win over Christophe Rochus of Belgium.
