Great Britain gain pole position


Great Britain finished their remaining Fed Cup Pool A match this morning with a crushing victory over Luxembourg.

GBs Melanie South played her first singles match in the Europe/Africa Group I tie, battering Fabienne Thill 6-0, 6-2. The match lasted little over 30 minutes with Thill only winning a handful of points in the first set.

Anne Keothavong, world No.54, then lost only three games in a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mandy Minella. Minella offered little resistance dropping her opening service game and despite having chances to break back early in the opening set, was never able to capitalise on them.

Melanie South and Sarah Borwell, GBs doubles pairing, were not given a chance to show off their skills as Luxembourg pulled out of the remaining doubles rubber on day three, handing Great Britain a 3-0 lead in the Fed Cup.

The Brits will be chuffed to have finished top of their pool, which puts them in Saturdays playoff against one of the other three pool winners.

Nigel Sears was delighted with the Fed Cup girls performances: We wanted to finish things up properly to win the group in style and the girls certainly did that. Im very happy with their performances in every match and they really deserve this opportunity to play for a promotion spot.

AEGON Team GB is likely to face either Belarus or Poland in tomorrows play off with the winner going on to a World Group II promotion playoff in April.
