Great Britain and Novak Djokovic-led Serbia receive Davis Cup wildcards

Great Britain and Novak Djokovic-led Serbia are the two teams to be awarded wildcards for next year’s Davis Cup, joining this year’s champions the Russian Tennis Federation and finalists Croatia.

With these wildcard entries, a total of four teams have now secured their appearance at next year’s tournament.

The Russian Tennis Federation (RTF) will compete as the reigning champions after they beat Croatia in this year’s final, who also receive automatic entry. Whilst Great Britain and Djokovic’s Serbia have received the two wildcard entries.

It has recently been revealed that next year’s Davis Cup will be held across five host cities and will feature 16 teams as opposed to the current 18.

With these changes, the 2022 edition of the tournament will see four cities host the group stage games and Great Britain could potentially be in line host one of the groups.

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) campaigned for Glasgow to be used as one of the host cities of this years tournament, but their bid was overlooked. The host cities selected for this year’s competition were Madrid, Turin and Innsbruck.

Kosmos Tennis CEO Enric Rojas told BBC Sport that “securing the number one in the world (Novak Djokovic) in our Finals, sporting wise, is the right call.

“Novak and the Serbian team were extremely committed this year. It was a very, very tough decision to decide the second wildcard.

“Wildcards are for securing the best potential teams with some kind of threat of not qualifying, and we thought that having Great Britain secured would be the right decision.”

Great Britain team captain Leon Smith said “we are delighted to be awarded a wildcard by the ITF and Kosmos into next year’s Davis Cup finals.

“All our GB players love coming together for these weeks and are keen to have another crack at the trophy again in 2022.”
