Grand Slam legend praises Carlos Alcaraz saying: ‘He has everything’
Seven-time Grand Slam winner Mats Wilander has heaped praise on teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz stating “he has everything” and that he is “important for tennis.”
The 19-year-old Alcaraz has made incredible strides in 2022, with the man from Murcia becoming the youngest player in Tour history to win an ATP 500 event and also becoming the youngest ever Miami Open champion.
The victory in Madrid earlier this month meant that Alcaraz is now sitting at a career high sixth in the world as he looks to “rest and recover” ahead of only his second French Open appearance.
Discussing the young Spaniard’s meteoric rise, the three-time French Open champion Mats Wilander argued that Carlos Alcaraz is different from any other player on tour at the moment, stating that the Madrid Masters champion is “important for tennis”.
Speaking exclusively to Marca, the former world number one told reporters, “Suddenly Alcaraz has appeared, who plays very differently from any of those mentioned.
“He can do the things that Tsitsipas does, like catch the ball very early, play aggressive; he can be just as solid as Zverev; maybe he can’t do what Medvedev does, because only he does things according to what… But Carlos has the resource of drop shots and the attitude that makes him different from the rest of the youngsters.
“I never saw someone with his way of acting and his freshness. He is always in the game, he is emotional, but at the same time he looks at his bench with a good attitude.
“He never seems to be relaxed and he has the best attitude I’ve ever seen. Carlos shows everything positive that he carries within him with his body language.
“I love how he acts, it is very important for tennis that there is a player who seems to be enjoying himself so much, who likes to compete so much and who hates losing.”
