Garrigues, the number one seed, had looked in danger of an early exit when she conceded the first set of her match with Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 6-1.

Wickmayer, who was a tournament winner two weeks ago in Estoril, could not maintain her form, however, and was eventually overrun 1-6 6-3 6-3 by the Spaniard.

Garrigues is a three-time winner of this event and will fancy her chances of improving that record further after the seeds fell on Tuesday.

After second seed Sybille Bammer was eliminated on Monday, Tamarine Tanasugarn (fifth), Elena Vesnina (sixth), Anna-Lena Groenefeld (seventh) and Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy (eighth) also exited.

Qualifier Viktoriya Kutuzova accounted for Tanasugarn 6-3 6-0, Julie Coin replicated her victory over Vesnina at this year’s Australian Open with a 6-4 6-2 win while Monica Niculescu came from behind to beat Groenefeld 4-6 6-2 6-3.

Alla Kudryavtseva played the spoiler’s role when she ousted local favourite Dechy in three sets 6-0 6-7(7/5) 6-3.

Other players to advance on Tuesday were Pauline Parmentier, Lucie Hradecka, Stephanie Foretz, Stephanie Cohen-Aloro, Anastasiya Yakimova and qualifier Yuliya Beygelzimer.
