Frustrated Amanda Anisimova talks after losing to Madison Keys: ‘I need to go home’

Amanda Anisimova was unable to match her result at Wimbledon last year after being beaten by Madison Keys.

Anisimova reached the Wimbledon final last year, where she was beaten by Iga Swiatek, and subsequently backed it up by also making the final of the US Open.

The American has struggled to replicate these results so far in 2026, as Anisimova has struggled with injuries to her back and wrist.

Anisimova was beaten by her compatriot Keys 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the third round of Wimbledon and she was openly frustrated in her post-match press conference.

Amanda Anisimova admits she has found it ‘really tough’ following her Wimbledon exit

It has been a tough few months for Anisimova, who has played just three tournaments since the Miami Open in March.

While she confirmed that she had no physical issues anymore, Anisimova admitted that she had been struggling, particularly with her forehand.

“Yeah, it’s been a really rough few months trying to find my game and obviously struggling with my forehand a lot lately,” said Anisimova.

“Just something that I’m still trying to figure out. Yeah, just not easy to go out there and my level being that low. Yeah, a lot of things for me to figure out. Yeah.”

Anisimova was then asked about bouncing back from this defeat and taking any silver linings from her Wimbledon exit, but it did not seem like she was ready to do so yet.

The 24-year-old revealed that she felt like she was playing at WTA 125 level rather than Grand Slam level, before an emotional Anisimova stated that she needed to go home to reflect on her current situation.

“Yeah, I don’t know. Normally, I’d be motivated and would just look at it as another opportunity going forward. But after the last few months, it’s really hard to see a silver lining, because it’s been really, really tough,” said Anisimova.

“I feel like I’m doing everything I can and working really hard. So for my game to still be at this point, it’s really hard to digest and take. It’s almost like I’m playing at a 125,000 level, not Wimbledon. That’s what I was saying to my coaches earlier. So, yeah, I don’t know.

“For me, it wasn’t enjoyable to play out there today with my tennis being like that. It was really, really tough. And when I’m happy and I’m enjoying it, it’s when I’m able to play my tennis. But when I’m not able to make one forehand in the court, it’s really, really hard. So, I don’t know. I need to go home and take some time and figure out how I can fix this.”

Tracy Austin suggests the shot she thinks Amanda Anisimova will be most disappointed with

Former world number one Tracy Austin also reacted to Anisimova’s defeat live on the BBC’s coverage of Wimbledon, also highlighting the forehand as a weakness in her loss to Keys.

“Anisimova will be disappointed with her forehand today,” said Austin. “But there have been a couple of months in the spring where she did not get to play, so not as many reps as she would like.

“But this was a masterclass by Madison Keys, really controlled her serve so well, 71% of her firsts serves in play, and the groundstrokes, after that first set where she might have been a little extra nervous playing on Centre Court for the first time, was so in control, and maintained the power. A really incredible day.”

Anisimova hit a total of 27 unforced errors on her forehand against Keys, compared to just eight winners.

The two-time Grand Slam finalist will now lose 1170 points from her ranking, with Anisimova currently 17th in the live race to the WTA Finals.
