French Open Social Slice: Joy for Krejcikova; home team triumph

For Social Slice today, we enjoy Barbora Krejcikova’s first Slam title, and a French Open title won by the home favourites.

The Czech was playing just her fifth Grand Slam singles main draw, but came out on top over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to add a French Open singles title to her five Slam titles across doubles and mixed doubles.

Her happiness was clear to see, especially during her post-match press conference when the trophy was delivered to her.

Joy also came with reflection, as Krejcikova once again brought to mind her late mentor and compatriot Jana Novotna.

“She was also very nice, very warm,” Krejcikova said of the 1998 Wimbledon champion.

“She was a great athlete, and she was still very humble.”

In the men’s doubles final, it was a dream for Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

The French duo claimed their second Roland Garros title and fifth Slam overall as a pair in front of a jubilant home crowd, who broke into song, belting out the national anthem after the trophy presentation.

Away from Paris, world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty shared her progress after withdrawing from Roland Garros due to injury.

The Aussie posted a video of her training from the All England Club ahead of Wimbledon, making sure to remain cautious in her caption.

‘The best news all day,’ replied one fan.

At another grass event, German duo Alexander Zverev and Kevin Krawietz enjoyed a round of golf ahead of this week’s Halle Open, the same tournament where Federer will return to the tennis lawns.
