Today marked a milestone day for Frances Tiafoe, who beat Taylor Fritz in the Halle Open final to claim the biggest title of his career.

Before this triumph, the best he had ever managed was at the 250 level, with Stuttgart, Houston and Delray Beach his only three.

But now, he can call himself an ATP 500 title winner, and the first American to ever do so at the Halle Open.

It puts him in the perfect position heading into Wimbledon, where he will hope to do some serious damage at a tournament where he has only ever made the fourth round at best.

He spoke about his game after the match, and also addressed his opponent and friend Taylor Fritz.

Frances Tiafoe speaks after winning the biggest title of his career in Halle

He began by outlining just how important this title is for him, speaking to Sky Sports: “Yeah, man, I’ve lost a lot of 500 finals. I’ve lost a lot of finals in my career. This is big.

“You know, a few weeks ago, it was one of the toughest of my career at the French Open, and to be able to come back and have a good week in Stuttgart and win here, my biggest title and beating the players I did.”

All four players missed out on a golden opportunity to win the French Open…

The American was serving incredibly all match, which allowed him to keep Fritz at arm’s length throughout.

Discussing his incredible level, Frances Tiafoe admitted: “Yeah, I don’t even know what clip I served. First set, I felt I couldn’t miss one.

“And I returned really, really well. You know, I had no doubles on my serve the whole match. Yeah, I just feel really good to get this now. I played a clean match. You know, I had to.

“I mean he’s a hell of a player, of a competitor too. I know he’s going to make me run out there until the end, and I played some great tennis, and, you know, luck was on my way a little bit.”

The interviewer then said, with performances like this, roll on Wimbledon.

Tiafoe smiled as he replied: “Yeah, yeah, next is Wimbledon. Obviously pretty excited to be out there and get out there. Yeah, but, you know, I’m gonna take this one in first and then SW19, I’ll see you in a week.”

Then, in his speech, he addressed Fritz directly: “Man, we played many times since the juniors and had so many battles. It was great to see you playing so well after your long knee injury, and come back on grass, and pick up where you left off.

“So congrats on these last two weeks, and, uh, keep going, brother. Keep going.”

Roddick had a message for Tiafoe after his crushing French Open defeat, but it seems he has bounced back well and is ready to thrive at the All England Club.

Fritz, as is customary as the runner-up, was first to speak.

He immediately congratulated Tiafoe, stating: “You know, I’ll start by saying congrats to Frances and his team. It was just too good.

“You know, you played great today, man, and I’m super happy for you, and as much as I don’t like you right now, you’re one of my best friends, and I’m super happy for you to get the title. I mean, you’ve been having a great year, so congrats.”

Then, he thanked his team, with Fritz having battled through a longstanding knee injury to get to this position.

He added: “I want to thank my team. They’re doing a great job. Keeping the ship running, keeping me going. It’s been a long two weeks here in Germany. You know, we’ll get the title next time, guys. Maybe third time’s the charm, but thank you for them.”

An incredible day for American tennis

Regardless of how all the results pan out, today has been a great day for American tennis.

After all, across three different tournaments, they boasted four players all vying for titles.

Naturally, Tiafoe and Fritz boosted those numbers in Halle, as they helped shape an enthralling all-American affair.

Meanwhile, over in Berlin, Jessica Pegula faces Linda Noskova in the final, hoping to back up her incredible win over world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Tommy Paul is still locked in a bid to recapture his Queen’s Club title, having been unable to compete in the event last year, but having won it in 2024.

Tiafoe had never beaten multiple top-ten players in the same event before this week, but did so en route to the title with wins over Flavio Cobolli, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Fritz.
