Frances Tiafoe lost to Matteo Arnaldi, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-7, 4-6, in the fourth round of the French Open.

The 28-year-old led by two breaks in the fourth set, but couldn’t get over the line, losing to Arnaldi after five hours and 26 minutes of scintillating tennis.

In doing so, Tiafoe let a golden opportunity to win his first Grand Slam title slip through his fingers.

Which player do you want to see win their first Grand Slam at Roland Garros?

Alexander Zverev is the favourite…

After the match, the last American Grand Slam men’s singles champion, Andy Roddick, shared what he wanted to tell Tiafoe.

Andy Roddick would tell Frances Tiafoe that his physicality has improved despite losing to Matteo Arnaldi

During the latest episode of ‘Quick Served‘, Roddick delivered his verdict on Tiafoe’s Roland Garros exit.

“I hate it for Frances [Tiafoe],” he said.

“He probably won’t be ready to hear anything positive from this for a while.

“Hopefully, he has a limited hangover.

“Also, if I had to say anything, I would say let’s try to see the trees through the forest a little bit, because you did not have this physicality in your body a year ago.

“You did not have the ability to lose in five and a half hours because you were losing in four hours and 40 minutes.

“All you can do is prepare yourself for the opportunity.

“You were prepared for the opportunity physically.”

Roddick continued, giving credit to Arnaldi, who will play Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-finals.

“Now game and how to close and all those conversations are going to be warranted at this point, but hell of an effort from [Matteo] Arnaldi,” he said.

“I feel for Foe.

“This game is going to give you these moments as a fan of ecstasy, and then you get stuck on those matches where you know your heart is going to break various amounts for whoever doesn’t win that match.

“That stinks.

“We have seen a lot of that this Roland Garros.

“We are lucky to watch these guys.”

Tiafoe’s improved fitness allowed him to play three consecutive five-set matches at Roland Garros, but it wasn’t enough.

The American will leave Paris knowing he missed out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity…

Will Frances Tiafoe ever have a better chance to win a Grand Slam?

Heading into his fourth-round match, Tiafoe was one of the favourites to reach the French Open final.

Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Novak Djokovic were all out of the competition, guaranteeing a new major champion would be crowned at Roland Garros.

Had Tiafoe beaten Arnaldi, he would have been a win over Matteo Berrettini and Felix Auger-Aliassime/Flavio Cobolli away from the French Open final.

Neither match would have been easy, but compared to the usual opponents you’d expect to see in the latter stages of a Grand Slam, Tiafoe would have fancied his chances.

Instead, he fell short again, losing to Arnaldi in a thrilling five-set match.

Frances Tiafoe’s best Grand Slam performances

Tiafoe will come again, but will he ever have another chance as good as this?

Come Wimbledon, Sinner and Djokovic will be back in the mix, and Alcaraz should return for the US Open.

With those three in the picture, your chances of winning a Slam rapidly decrease.

So, if Tiafoe is ever going to get his hands on a Grand Slam title, he will likely have to do it the hard way.

Never one to back down from a fight, you wouldn’t want to count Tiafoe out just yet…

Tiafoe will have his sights set on redemption at Wimbledon, which begins on Monday, June 29.
