Five things to know about Hugo Gaston ahead of Paris return
Hugo Gaston will feature as a wildcard in the ATP 1000 Paris Masters after an impressive display on home soil at the French Open.
The young Frenchman stunned 2015 Roland Garros champion Stan Wawrinka before a scintillating five-set battle with World No 3 Dominic Thiem in the last 16.
Tennishead looks at five things you should know about the 20-year-old Frenchman.
1) Gaston claimed gold at the Youth Olympics
Hugo Gaston claimed a gold medal at the Summer Youth Olympic Games 2018 in Buenos Aires and was picked to be the flagbearer for the French delegation.
2) Gaston has a very unorthodox playing style
The Frenchman is known for his unique style of play. He is left-handed and often utilises the dropshot in his matches. He is known to hit most of his dropshots after bringing his opponent out wide with his serve and attempted 58 drop shots in his match against Dominic Thiem.
3) Gaston began his Roland Garros campaign without a win on tour
Prior to his impressive run at Roland Garros, the 20-year-old had not won a single tour-level match and was competing in just his second Grand Slam after exiting the Australian Open in the first round earlier this year.
4) Gaston was the lowest-ranked man to reach the fourth round of Roland Garros in 18 years
At No. 239, Gaston was the lowest-ranked player to reach the fourth round, with fellow Frenchman No. 283 Arnaud di Pasquale, reaching the fourth round in 2002, also as a wildcard.
5) Gaston has made a huge rise up the ATP rankings
In May 2019, Hugo Gaston was ranked 519th in the World. After some encouraging performances on the Challenger tour and his fourth round appearance at the French Open, Gaston reached a career high ranking of 157 earlier this month.
