Ferrer joins new world No.1 Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in qualifying for the eight-man season-ending event, leaving the likes of Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga chasing the remaining four spots.

“At the beginning of the year it’s always a goal to make it to London and if you finish in the Top 8 then you know that you’ve had a good season’” said Ferrer. “The O2 is an amazing venue to play at and the great fans help to bring the event alive.”

Juan Martin Del Potro leads the charge for the remaining four places following victory at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships last week. Tomas Berdych is yet to win a title this season, but sits in sixth place as he closes in on 50 match wins for the season.

Swiss pair Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka currently occupy the final two spaces but Milos Raonic and Richard Gasquet are hot on their heels, with Wawrinka and Raonic scheduled to meet in the third round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters this week.

For 2011 finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, this week is realistically the last chance for him to stake his claim, while John Isner and Tommy Haas still have an outside chance of being in London.

Whoever finishes ninth could find themselves in the draw afterall as Andy Murray continues his rehabilitation from back surgery. The world No.3 has not officially pulled out of the event but is thought to be targeting a return in time for the new season.
