The Wimbledon champion will begin his grass-court season in south-west Germany for a third consecutive year – and he will be hoping to enjoy a productive stay in the industrial city.
“Excited to announce that I will be coming back to for the Mercedes Cup in June,” stated Federer on his Facebook page. “Looking forward to seeing you at the grass-courts in Stuttgart.”
The Swiss has not enjoyed the best of results on his last two visits to Stuttgart. He fell to eventual winner, Dominic Thiem, in 2016 and endured a shock second round loss to Tommy Haas 13 months ago.
Federer, who has not played since a second round defeat to Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Miami Open in March, headlines a stellar cast list. Lucas Pouille, Milos Raonic, Hyeon Chung, Nick Kyrgios, Feliciano Lopez, David Ferrer and Denis Shapovalov are also scheduled to be involved.
Grigor Dimitrov, a frequent performer in Stuttgart, will not be involved this year. The Bulgarian has decided against commencing his grass-court campaign at a venue where he has tended to struggle.
He failed to register a single victory in 2016 or 2017, falling to Juan Martin del Potro and Jerzy Janowicz respectively.
