Roger Federer injury update casts major doubt on Laver Cup participation

Roger Federer might not be fit in time to return to court at this month’s Laver Cup after further complications with his right knee.

Fans have been anticipating the long-marked return of the 20-time Slam champion at the fifth edition of the exhibition event in London from 23rd-25th September, where Federer was expected to team up with fellow greats Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray as part of a stacked Team Europe line-up.

However, according to Swiss reporter Tages Anzeiger, the 41-year-old has run into more troubles on his recovery, forcing him to reduce his physical preparation, saying: “he has liquid in his right knee and it has become inflamed”

Federer participated in the first three editions of the Laver Cup in 2017, 2018 and 2019, but was injured during the fourth event in 2021 a little over two months after his most recent competitive play in the quarter-finals of that year’s Wimbledon.

Across those Laver Cups Federer won all six of his singles matches and two of five doubles ties, including teaming up with Nadal in 2017 and Djokovic in 2018.

Beyond the Laver Cup 2022, Federer aims to return to competitive ATP tour action at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, a tournament he has won a record 10 times in his illustrious career, the last three of those coming from 2017 to 2019. Due to the pandemic, the event was not staged in 2020 or 2021, but the 51st edition of the event will take place from 24-30th October.
