Erakovic wins in Memphis

Ranked 56th in the world, Erakovic was challenged in the first set before taking control en route to a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 triumph.

The New Zealand native, who reached the second round at the Australian Open, next will meet either Jill Craybas or wild card Melanie Oudin.

In another first-round match, Kristina Barrois rallied for a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3) triumph over Jarmila Groth.

The top seed is Carolina Wozniacki, who lost to Lindsay Davenport in the quarter-finals here last year.
