Emma Raducanu - US Open 2024

Emma Raducanu withdraws from China Open due to foot injury

Emma Raducanu has announced her withdrawal from the upcoming China Open, with the Brit revealing that she has sprained some ligaments in her foot.

Raducanu featured in the draw made in Beijing earlier today, and was set to play a qualifier before a potential second round meeting with Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng.

However, less than an hour later Raducanu was pulled out of the WTA 1000 tournament, meaning that she will be replaced by a lucky loser.

This comes just a couple of days after Raducanu was forced to retire from her quarter-final match in Seoul against Daria Kasatkina due to a foot issue.

And now Raducanu has clarified the specifics of her injury in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Hello, last week in Seoul i sprained some ligaments in my foot which unfortunately need some more time to heal. It means I can’t play in Beijing but I hope to be back competing as soon as I can.”

Raducanu will be hoping for a swift recovery, with a busy upcoming schedule across the Asian swing.

The 2021 US Open champion is next scheduled to compete at the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan, that begins on 7th October, before heading to Ningbo, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

Inside the baseline…

It is a bit of a disappointing setback for Emma Raducanu, who was clearly hampered by a foot issue in her quarter-final match in Seoul – with it being her first retirement this year. There has been a lot of criticism for Raducanu’s lack of matchplay this year, and it would be incredibly frustrating if this injury prevents her from competing a busy schedule in Asia like she had planned to.
