Emma Raducanu is ‘the real deal’ and has ‘unbelievable opportunity’ to progress at US Open, declares Mats Wilander

British star Emma Raducanu is ‘the real deal’ and has an ‘unbelievable opportunity’ to reach fourth round of US Open, according to seven-time Major champion Mats Wilander.

Raducanu burst onto the scene at Wimbledon after receiving a maiden main draw wildcard. The Brit enjoyed a stunning run, which included wins against former French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova and Sorana Cirstea, while wowing a thrilled British crowd.

The 18-year-old cruised through US Open qualifying without dropping a single set, before blowing away Chinese number one Shuai Zhang 6-2, 6-4 to reach round three.

“Zhang Shuai is a very good player, Emma Raducanu lost to her in her first match after Wimbledon, and then she won easily here.” Wilander, speaking as a Eurosport expert, said.

“Emma Raducanu is the real deal. She is athletic and mature on court.”

“She has played three qualifying matches and two main draws, so it is an amazing tournament for her.”

Raducanu faces tricky Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo next and Wilander is expecting a tough match.

“It is not going to be easy,” Wilander said. “If Emma Raducanu can beat this lady, she is going to have to play some real good tennis, not for one hour, not for one set but for a long period.”

“It is an unbelievable opportunity for Raducanu and Sorribes Tormo to play each other and get to the fourth round. Sorribes Tormo is as tough as anyone to beat.”

Raducanu was ranked 350 in January, a third round win could see move inside the world’s top 100.
