Emma Raducanu ‘has the potential to be world number one’, believes Greg Rusedski

Greg Rusedski has heaped praise on Emma Raducanu following her US Open triumph in September, predicting the British star will become a multiple Major champion and potentially a world number one.

The 18-year-old became the first qualifier in history to win a Grand Slam title after defeating fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez in the final.

Rusedski insisted that Raducanu has performed way above expectations in her first two Majors, which have provided her with a platform to win many Major titles.

“I think she’s going to be a multiple Grand Slam champion and has the potential to be world number one. What she’s done in her first two Majors, there’s very few players that have reached fourth round of a Grand Slam in their first one, then went onto win the US Open.” Rusedski said.

The former British number one highlighted the keys to her future success will be staying healthy and building a good team to support her.

“Her future is going to be exceptional if she can stay healthy and put the right team around here, I think her future will be incredible.”

Rusedski added his thoughts on Raducanu’s current coaching situation, declaring that Darren Cahill who coached former world number one Simona Halep would be a great long-term appointment.

“I think she’s had some great coaches throughout her career and development as a player, when she got to the fourth round of Wimbledon she had one of the best coaches in the business in Nigel Sears. It’ll be interesting to see who she appoints at the end of the season, there’s talk about Darren Cahill who worked with Simona Halep, if she could tie up with that sort of coach from a long-term basis, that would be great.”
