Emma Raducanu US Open 2021

Emma Raducanu among nominees for prestigious British sporting award

Emma Raducanu has been nominated for the distinguished BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award and is one of the favourites to win the award.

19-year-old US Open champion Raducanu has been nominated to win the distinguished BBC Sport Personality of the Year Award after she became the first qualifier to ever win a Grand Slam tournament.

She also won the US Open without dropping a single set despite facing World number six Maria Sakkari and former World number four Belinda Bencic.

Raducanu’s US Open victory and reaching the quarter-finals of the Transylvania Open saw her break into the Women’s Tennis Association’s (WTA) top 20.

This phenomenal breakthrough season also saw Raducanu win the WTA Newcomer of the Year and the BT Action Woman of the Year awards.

Raducanu is competing against some elite competition for the award, although she is still one of the favourites to win.

Also nominated to win the award are Olympic diver Tom Daley, Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty, Manchester City and England footballer Raheem Sterling, heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury and Paralympic cyclist Dame Sarah Storey.

Sterling was a major part of an England team that reached just their second ever major tournament final at the European Championships this Summer. Whilst Fury became the heavyweight champion of the World and Daley won two World Cup gold medals.

A notable omission from the nominations is Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, a sportsman Raducanu has a lot of respect for after he offered her some invaluable advice at the end of November. As such, Raducanu was rooting for Hamilton to win the award.

Hamilton came agonisingly close to a record-breaking eighth World championship, but lost to Max Verstappen in controversial fashion.
