Canada’s third seed waltzed through the first set 6-2 but was made to work a little harder before taking the second 7-5.

The other second-round winners were the Czech Republic’s fourth seed Lucie Safarova – easing through in straight sets against Canada’s Valerie Tetreault – American wild card Bethanie Mattek-Sands – 6-3 6-3 against her compatriot Vania King – and Lilia Osterloh, also from the USA, who beat her fellow qualifier Amra Sadikovic of Switzerland 6-3 2-6 6-2.
