In a tournament already blown wide open by the departures of the top two seeds yesterday, there was another high-profile casualty with fourth seed Aravane Rezai beaten 6-3 4-6 6-4 by Marta Domachowska of Poland.

There was no repeat performance from Ukraine’s Mariya Koryttseva, a first-round winner over top seed Vera Zvonareva, as she was forced to retire at 6-2 3-6 4-1 down to Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky.
