“Doubles is for failed singles players” – Reilly Opelka

Reilly Opelka reignites the debate over the relevance of doubles, calling for its removal and claiming it wastes resources.

Reilly Opelka has reignited the debate over the relevance of doubles tennis with his recent comments. In response to Taylor Fritz’s support for the US Open’s new mixed doubles format, Opelka sarcastically labeled Fritz as “disrespectful towards doubles specialists” and suggested, “They should 100% get rid of dubs. It’s for failed singles players.” He further criticized doubles for not attracting audiences and consuming resources, stating, “They don’t sell a single ticket, they take up practice courts/physios/resources.”

Opelka’s remarks have sparked backlash from fans and players alike. Critics argue that his perspective undermines the achievements of successful doubles players and overlooks the entertainment value doubles matches bring to tournaments. The controversy highlights the ongoing discussion about the place of doubles in professional tennis and the respect given to its participants.

This isn’t the first time Opelka has expressed such views. He has previously criticized doubles players, calling them overpaid and suggesting that the format is “boring.” Despite his criticisms, Opelka has competed in doubles events, even securing an ATP 250 title in Atlanta alongside Jannik Sinner in 2021.

Inside the Baseline…

Opelka’s words cut deep, but the sentiment isn’t new. The debate over doubles’ place in the sport has lingered for years, often fueled by singles players who see it as a sideshow rather than a staple. But dismissing an entire discipline as a place for those who couldn’t cut it in singles ignores the skill, strategy, and entertainment doubles brings. If anything, the backlash to his comments proves that while doubles may not command the same spotlight, it still has a fiercely loyal following and a rightful place on tour.
