Dominic Thiem announced for upcoming tournament despite recent retirement
Dominic Thiem has been announced to compete in an upcoming exhibition event, despite retiring from the ATP Tour just last month.
Thiem announced back in May that this season would be the last of his professional career, after revealing that his wrist injury had worsened once again.
This all came to a head at the recent Vienna Open, with Thiem losing in the first round to Luciano Darderi before receiving a final farewell from his home crowd.
Thiem ended his career with a career-high ranking of World No.3 and as a 17-time title winner, highlighted by his only Grand Slam triumph at the 2020 US Open.
However, it appears that the Austrian is not ready to hang his racket up just yet, after being announced for an annual exhibition event in Normandy, France.
“Hello everybody. Keep the date for my first participation, the Open de Caen, from 8th to 11th December,” Thiem said in a social media video. “I’ll be there for my first match on Monday the 9th. See you there.”

Thiem will play former champion Richard Gasquet, who is also set to retire next year, in the quarter-final on Monday 9th December, with the winner going on to play French No.1 Ugo Humbert for a place in the final.
The men’s draw also features Cameron Norrie, and French players Alexandre Muller, Jules Marie and Adrien Gobat, while the women’s event consists of Elise Mertens, Dayana Yastremska, Alice Robbe and Audrey Albie.

Dominic Thiem has had such a rough few years with injury, which seemed to come very soon after he won his maiden Grand Slam title in New York. Thiem could no longer compete week-in-week-out on the ATP Tour, but it is still nice to see that he wants to play in these fun exhibitions and it will be interesting to see if that is something that he continues to do in future years.
